Title: Ottoline and the Purple Fox Author: Chris Riddell This book is about a girl called Ottoline and her friend Mr Munroe. One day, Ottoline was emptying the house and met a Purple Fox who lived in the bins. Later that day, Ottoline decided to have a party. So, she invited all her friends including the Purple Fox and his assistant the Crimson Vixen. On the night everyone came and had a good time. At the end of the party, the Purple Fox asked Ottoline and Mr Munroe if they wanted to go on an Urban Safari. So, they said yes and did it! After the safari, they met up with the Crimson Vixen and saw that she was sad because the Purple Fox didn’t seem to like her. However, with the help of their friends, they made a plan to make the Purple Fox like her. Will their plan help make them become best friends? Does the plan work? I recommend it to 7+ and give it 5*. I love this book especially the illustrations. Chris Riddell is the best author/illustrator ever. If you haven’t discovered Chris Riddell yet, read his other Ottoline books as they are great!

Title: The Secret of Nightingale Wood Author: Lucy Strange This book is about a girl called Henry (short from Henrietta) who has just moved to a new house called Hope House. She has moved with her family because her brother died and they wanted to start a new life. Mysterious things start to happen at Hope House – mama gets sick; dad is abroad; Nanny Jane is looking after Henry’s younger sister Piglet; the doctor insists on mum’s door being locked; a strange, limping man keeps appearing and Henry keeps seeing smoke coming from the woods. When Henry goes into the woods for the first time, she meets a strange, witch who one day looks after her when she gets a cold. This sparks an unusual friendship between the two. What happened to Henry’s brother Robert? What is wrong with Mama? Why does the doctor lock mama away? You’ll have to read the book to get the answers! I recommend this book to age 10+ readers who like suspense and mystery and a bit of magic. I give it 10/10.   Images drawn by Alexander.

Title: Mango & Bambang – Tiny Tapir Trouble Author: Polly Faber This is the third book in the series which is about a girl called Mango and her tapir Bambang. This book has 4 stories that are related to each other. My favourite story is about chess. One day a year, the town have a chess tournament. In the tournament, Mango won all her matches – all the way up until she reached the final! In the final she had to play FITZROY KIPNEY, the previous champion for 3 years!!!! However, Fitzroy hates chess but his dad forces him to play it because his dad knows all the tricks of the trade! Does Mango win or does she lose? Are Fitzroy and his dad cheats? Can Bambang help? I really liked the pictures in this book because they were really good. I recommend it to 7+ and give it 5*.

Title: The Royal Rabbits of London Author: Santa Montefiore, Simon Sebag Montefiore This book is about a puny little bunkin called Shylo Tawny-Tail who is cowardly but extremely clever. He is the youngest in his family so his brothers and sisters tease him a lot. One day Shylo was walking through the forest by himself looking for food for his family, when he came across a small burrow. Here he met the mysterious Horatio and they became friends. One morning, on his way to Horatio’s burrow, he came across some rats and overheard their evil plan to take a picture of the Queen in her nightie and post it on Rat-on-a-celebrity.com making them a million quid. He quickly ran to Horatio’s and told him what he heard. So Horatio sent him on a mission to find the Royal Rabbits of London and save the Queen from humiliation. Does he find the Royal Rabbits? Does he get caught? Can he become the most famous rabbit in history? You need to read the book to find out! We enjoyed this book because it is adventurous, exciting and it teaches you “BIG THINGS come in small packages”. We recommend it to 8+ readers…

Title: The Racehorse who wouldn’t gallop Author: Clare Balding This book is about a girl called Charlie who lives on a farm with her family and Charlie’s friend Joe. One day, when Charlie was at school, she met her friend Polly who told her about a horse show at the weekend. So, as soon as she got home she told her mum. Her mum said she could ONLY go if she didn’t buy anything! So, the next day, she went with her father to the show. When they went to the bidding ring, there was one horse and one pony. She saw Polly and waved at her but it cost her £1,0000. But how? You’ll have to read the book to find out! THIS IS WHERE THE STORY BEGINS! What is so special about the horse? Why doesn’t he gallop? Who is naughty Percy? How does Charlie become famous? All these questions will be answered in the book. I give it 10/10. If you like watching the Derby and horse racing, this is the book for you. I recommend it to 8+ horse lovers.

Title: They didn’t teach THIS in worm School! Author: Simone Lia This book is about a worm called Marcus and a bird called Laurence, who wanted to go to Lake Nakuru in Kenya because he wanted to be with the flamingos, even though he wasn’t one! So, Marcus slid up Laurence’s back and they started to fly towards Kenya. Marcus only went on the trip to help his new friend, Laurence navigate. At one point, they flew by pylons and thought they were lots of Eiffel Towers connected with wires! Obviously they can’t have been the Eiffel Tower because there is only one and it’s a different shape to a pylon! Their flight didn’t go to plan because they didn’t get to their final destination! However, they found a place that was just as good. On their journey they made friends as well as enemies. I give it 5* because I enjoyed the book and liked the pictures. If you are 8+ and like funny stories, you’ll love this book!

Title: The Accidental Pirates Author: Claire Fayers This book is about a girl called Brine Seaborne who is 12 years old. She was found in a rowing boat with a starshell piece around her neck (a starshell holds magic from around you). Ever since she got found she was a slave for a magician called Tallis Magus and his apprentice, Peter. Peter and Brine ran away because they broke Tallis Magus’s starshell by standing on it and they didn’t want to get killed by him! Quickly, they ran to a boat and rowed to the middle of the sea. Suddenly, they saw the mighty Onion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But what is the Mighty Onion??? THIS IS WHERE THE STORY BEGINS! If you like pirates, adventure and funny poems, this is the book for you! My favourite part of the book is when they find Magical North – the most magical place in the world. I give it 10/10 and recommend it to 8+.
